The Coffee That Isn’t Actually Coffee

Something unexpected was hiding in our cup at a Bergen County coffee shop. Can you identify the drink.. and figure out where we found it?

It looked like coffee.

Dark, warm, familiar.. the kind of drink that wouldn’t normally warrant a second glance at a local coffee shop.

Except this one came with a surprise.

What was actually in the cup? We’re not telling you yet.

We recently came across this unusual brew at a coffee shop here in Bergen County, and once we learned a little more about what we were drinking, we discovered there was a surprisingly interesting history behind it.

There’s also something missing from this cup that you might ordinarily expect to find in your afternoon coffee.

That’s your first clue.

Think You Know What It Is?

We’re turning this discovery into a Bergen Society challenge.

We want you to identify two things:

What’s in the cup?

And…

Where in Bergen did we find it?

Head over to @bergensociety on Instagram, or our FB page, or even our Youtube channel (yes, we opened them all so you can follow wherever you’re active!) watch the video closely, and leave your guesses.

No Googling. No calling every coffee shop in Bergen County. And definitely no asking the person who brought you here for the answer.

We’ll reveal what we’re drinking, where we found it, and the surprisingly interesting story behind this coffee-that-isn’t-quite-coffee after you’ve had a chance to guess.

Because Bergen Society is about noticing the interesting things hiding in plain sight.

Sometimes that means discovering the story behind a person, a place or a neighborhood institution.

And sometimes, apparently, it means taking a closer look at what’s in your cup.
